Mukhtyar Singh

Mukhtyar Singh* has spent over 7 years in Kasna prison. He is a farmer by occupation, who lived with his family, comprising of a wife and two children. He completed his schooling, till 12th grade, and is proficient in Hindi and Punjabi languages, but isn’t fluent in English. He was known for his aggressive and violent nature among inmates, inside prison.  After enrolling in the Adult Education program, he can now comprehend and write basic English. He showed his keenness towards learning computers and enrolled himself in the computer vocational program. With no prior experience, he can now work on Microsoft programs like Word, PowerPoint, Excel, and MS-Paint hassle-free. He hopes to make use of his newly acquired skills post-release, to enhance his knowledge about the latest farming practices and in improving his farming techniques. The Prison administration along with Mr. Singh’s fellow mates noticed a dramatic shift in his behaviour and attitude with regular counselling and by his consistent engagement in activities. He has become a lot calmer, composed, and focused, trying to make his time in the prison more productive. During focus group discussions as well, Protiviti team members found him to be very forthcoming with his responses, reflecting a very progressive attitude towards women. He is very optimistic and confident about his future, post-release.
