We are very proud to share that last September our Director Ms. Monica Dhawan represented India Vision Foundation at ‘International Symposium on Progressive abolition of violence against children in closed institutions in Central Asia- Kazakhstan’. The symposium explored the importance of separation of children from adults and abolishing the use of solitary confinement. Other key international standards like ‘The United Nations (UN) Rules for the Protection of Juveniles Deprived of their Liberty (Havana Rules); The UN Standard Minimum Rules for the Administration of Juvenile Justice (Beijing Rules) and the UN Rules for the Treatment of Women Prisoners and Non- Custodial Measures for Women Offenders (Bangkok Rules) on the importance of disciplinary measures being gender-sensitive were discussed. It was agreed that exchange of information is very beneficial to all personnel working within the penal systems of Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan therefore; such interactions should be continued on a regular basis. Ms. Dhawan took training session with 15 officials from Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan on Role of NGO’s in Reformation in Indian Prisons. The participants were happy to know about the Children of Vulnerable Families Project and appreciated the efforts of the foundation. Ms. Dhawan proposed to Penal Reforms International to assist in facilitating a visit of key personnel to India for purpose of a study visit to understand the model better.
India Vision Foundation is a voluntary non-profit, non-government organization registered as a Trust in India vide No. 4595 dated August 1, 1994. The foundation was born out of Ramon Magsaysay award (Equivalent to Asia's Nobel Peace Prize) conferred to Dr. Kiran Bedi, the first lady IPS (Indian Police Services) of India, for forging ‘positive relationships’ between people and police through creative leadership. Foundation aspires to contribute towards a crime free society by initiating reformation programs for prison inmates and reintegration opportunities to released inmates for the reduction in recidivism also facilitate welfare programs for their children to save them from becoming victims of their parental incarceration.
